The Benefits of Barley Grass
Barley grass is an annual grass and is a cereal grain.
The grain part of the plant is high in nutrients, as are the leaves. The young green leaves form early in the plant’s life cycle and take up high amounts of nutrients from the soil. They are rich in many nutrients including chlorophyll, proteins, vitamins and minerals.
Barley leaf proteins are polypeptides. These are comparatively small protein molecules which are therefore more directly absorbed by the blood. Protein is responsible for allowing the body to undertake cell metabolism and cell renewal. It is very important in the rebuilding and repair of bodily cells. Barley grass contains eighteen amino acids, which are the building blocks of the proteins, many of which cannot be produced by the body but which are vital for its function.
The leaves of the barley plant also contain high levels of vitamins and minerals. They contain, for example, eleven times the amount of calcium as does cows’ milk, and seven times the amount of Vitamin C as oranges. There are also significant levels of the B complex vitamins, beta carotene, and folic acid. Further, high levels of many minerals are present, such as copper, zinc, magnesium and potassium.
It has been shown through studies that green barley leaves have strong anti-inflammatory properties. It can be a useful supplement in treating such conditions as arthritis, sports injuries or allergies, in which inflammation is present.
Further benefits of the plant include that it can be helpful in preventing the formation of ulcers and may lower cholesterol levels as it helps to reduce low density lipoprotein cholesterol rates in the blood.
Antioxidants reduce the levels of free-radicals in the body, which are implicated in the aging process and in the development of many diseases and ailments. High amounts of antioxidants are present in green barley leaves.
The leaves of the barley plant are a rich source of nutrients and have been attributed to improving stamina, are an effective aid to mental processes, and greatly improve the appearance of the skin, including by reducing dryness.
It can be consumed most easily as a powder and can be mixed with juice or water to assist its digestion. Capsule or tablet forms are also popular. Freshly pressed barley grass juice contains the greatest amount of enzymes but is quite bitter.
There are not any known toxic effects of consuming barley grass.
